Chennai has expanded its smart traffic signal system to 100 locations across the city as part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic management and reduce congestion at busy intersections. City officials said the expansion marks a significant step toward using technology-driven solutions to address growing traffic challenges.
The smart traffic signals are designed to adjust signal timings in real time based on vehicle density, helping ease bottlenecks during peak hours. Authorities noted that the system collects live traffic data, allowing for better coordination across junctions and smoother movement along major corridors.
Several of the newly added smart signals have been installed at high-traffic intersections, including arterial roads and areas prone to frequent congestion. Traffic officials said early results from pilot locations showed improved vehicle flow and reduced waiting times for commuters.
The initiative is part of a broader push to modernize Chennai’s traffic infrastructure, which also includes enhanced surveillance, adaptive traffic control systems, and data-driven planning. Officials added that real-time monitoring enables quicker responses to traffic disruptions caused by accidents, roadworks, or sudden surges in traffic volume.
Commuters have welcomed the move, with many noting more predictable travel times at junctions where smart signals are operational. City authorities said further evaluations will be conducted to assess performance, and additional improvements may be introduced based on traffic patterns and commuter feedback.
