Bengal cold wave alert — weather + health relevance

Cold wave and dense fog affect West Bengal as temperatures drop sharply

Cold wave conditions tightened their grip across several parts of West Bengal on Wednesday as minimum temperatures dropped below seasonal averages, bringing harsh winter conditions to both urban and rural areas. Dense fog during early morning hours reduced visibility, disrupting transport services and daily routines.

Districts including Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Nadia, and parts of north Bengal experienced cold conditions accompanied by persistent fog. Meteorological officials attributed the weather pattern to cold northerly winds and clear night skies, which allowed temperatures to fall rapidly.

Health authorities issued advisories urging residents to take precautions against cold-related illnesses, particularly among the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Hospitals and local health centres were advised to remain alert for an increase in cases of hypothermia, respiratory infections, and seasonal ailments.

Transport services were also affected, with several trains running behind schedule and flights experiencing delays due to low visibility. Traffic movement slowed in many areas as commuters exercised caution during fog-covered mornings.

Weather officials said that while slight improvement may be seen during daytime hours, cold wave and fog conditions are likely to persist in parts of the state over the next few days. Residents have been advised to follow official weather updates and avoid prolonged exposure to cold, especially during early morning and late night hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department, cold wave conditions and dense fog are likely to continue in isolated areas of West Bengal.
