Tamil Nadu Bus Fitness PIL Filed in High Court

Madras High Court hears PIL seeking fitness audit of buses in Tamil Nadu

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a comprehensive fitness audit of government and private buses operating across Tamil Nadu. The petition raises concerns over passenger safety and calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle fitness norms.

According to the plea, regular and transparent inspections are necessary to ensure that buses meet mandated safety standards, including braking systems, tyres, lighting, and structural integrity. The petitioner urged the court to direct authorities to conduct periodic audits and make inspection reports publicly accessible.

The High Court has issued notice to the state government and concerned transport authorities, seeking their response on the matter. Officials are expected to outline existing inspection mechanisms and steps taken to ensure that buses operating on public roads are roadworthy.

Transport experts have noted that buses form a critical part of daily mobility for millions across the state, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. Any lapse in maintenance or oversight, they said, could pose serious risks to commuters and road users.

The case has renewed focus on transport safety in Tamil Nadu, with observers saying that court intervention could lead to tighter compliance and improved accountability. The matter is expected to be taken up for further hearing after responses from the authorities are submitted.

According to reports carried by the Times of India, the High Court has sought responses from the state government on the PIL.
